Cat Calorie and Meal Calculator
Enter your cat’s details below. The tool returns a daily calorie goal and turns it into cups, cans, or grams of food.
Your results will appear here.
How to use the calculator
- Weigh your cat. A kitchen or baby scale works best. If your cat will not sit still, weigh yourself holding the cat and subtract your own weight.
- Choose life stage, activity, and body condition. Run your hands along the ribs and look for a waist from above. A score of 5 is ideal.
- Enter the food. Copy the kcal ME figure from the label. Pick dry, wet, or mixed.
- Press Calculate. Read the goal, the food amounts, and the steps under “How we got this number.” You can print the plan too.
Worked example for a 10 lb neutered adult
Take a moderately active cat with a body condition score of 5. It eats half dry food at 400 calories per cup and half wet food at 80 calories per can. The plan has three meals and a 10 percent treat budget.
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
| Resting energy (70 × 4.540.75) | about 218 kcal |
| Times 1.2 for a neutered adult | 261 kcal per day |
| Treat budget (10 percent) | 26 kcal per day |
| Left for meals | 235 kcal per day, or about 78 kcal per meal |
| Dry food, half of meals | 0.29 cup per day |
| Wet food, half of meals | 1.47 cans per day |
You can compare other weights and ages in the calories by weight table and the kitten chart.
Why the tool may change your plan
The calculator checks your inputs against a few safety rules. You may see a note when one of them applies.
- A body condition score of 7 or higher switches a maintenance goal to weight loss.
- A score of 5 or lower overrides a weight loss goal, since a cat at a healthy weight should not diet without vet advice.
- A score of 3 or lower triggers a warning to see a vet before any diet change.
- Kittens skip the goal setting because growth comes first.
Get steadier results
Weigh your cat on the same scale at the same time of day. Use the calories printed on your own food’s label, because flavors within one brand can differ. Weigh food in grams when you can, since a cup of kibble is a loose measure.
What this calculator cannot do
It cannot see your cat. Two cats with the same weight can differ by 20 percent in real needs. Treat the result as a trial amount. Weigh your cat every two weeks and adjust by about 10 percent. If you are unsure about the body score, read the body condition section first.
Calculator questions
Can I use the calculator for more than one cat?
Yes. Run it once for each cat, because weight, age, and body condition differ. If the cats share a food, use the same food calories in each run.
Can I enter food calories per kilogram?
Yes. Switch the “Per” menu to kilogram. The results then show grams per day and grams per meal, which is the most precise way to portion food.
How often should I recalculate?
Rerun it every two weeks for kittens and for cats on a weight loss plan. Adults can wait a month or two. Also rerun it after any change in weight, activity, or food.
