Cat Treat Calories: How Many Are Too Many?
Treats should stay under 10 percent of daily calories. See how to count them and cut meals to match.
The 10 percent rule
Treats and extras should be no more than 10 percent of daily calories. For a 260 calorie cat, that is 26 calories, or about a dozen small crunchy treats at 2 calories each.
Count and subtract
Add treat calories to the day, then reduce the meal portion by the same amount. Our calculator can set aside a 10 percent treat limit.
Better options
Use a few pieces of the cat’s own kibble, or small bits of cooked plain chicken. Never give onions, garlic, grapes, raisins or chocolate.
Mistakes
Treat bags often have no clear serving size. Family members may each give “just one.” Agree on a daily treat count.
