Cat Body Condition Score (BCS): How to Check at Home
The 9-point body condition score shows if your cat is thin, ideal or overweight. Learn a simple hands-on check.
The 9-point scale
1 to 3 is underweight. 4 to 5 is ideal. 6 to 9 is overweight to obese. Each point above ideal is roughly 10 percent over healthy weight.
Hands-on check
- Ribs: you should feel them under a thin fat layer
- From above: you should see a waist
- From the side: the belly should tuck up
Why it beats the scale
Weight alone ignores frame size. A large, lean cat and a small, plump cat can weigh the same. Use BCS with weight and track both.
What to do next
If your cat is a 6 or above, lower calories gradually. For 7 and above, plan with your vet. Read our guide on helping an overweight cat lose weight.
